Once Weekly vs. Daily Treatmentby PEhomepage.com Editorial Team
Researchers in
Spain tested whether or not using the drug fluoxetine would increase the latency time for men who suffer from PE. During the trial, 80 men between the ages of 19 and 53 years old were divided into two groups. The first group took one dose of 90 mg of fluoxetine per week, while the second group took 20 mg of fluoxetine per day.
Patients were encouraged to have sex twice a week.
Researchers also took into consideration the age of the patient. Side effects were measured with a questionnaire to determine whether or not the medication had any adverse effects. Finally, researchers asked at the end of the trial for partners to evaluate their sexual satisfaction with.
Researchers found that age did not have a significant effect on the results of the trial. Since age was not a factor in the end result, this study indirectly demonstrated that treatments for PE could be effective regardless of the patient’s age. Patients who took one dose of 90 mg of fluoxetine per week experienced slightly better results than those who took 20 mg daily. Before starting the trial, men who were in the 90 mg group had an average ejaculation latency time of .48 minutes. At the end of the trial, this same group had an average ejaculation latency time of 3.57 minutes. By comparison, men in the 20 mg daily group had an average pre-trial time of .50 minutes. At the end of the trial the 20 mg daily group had an average latency time of 3.37 minutes.
Equally important the percentage of partners from the 90 mg weekly group who stated that they were sexually satisfied was 45 percent at the end of the trial. Partners in the 20 mg daily group also reported sexual satisfaction, although to a lesser extent – 40 percent of the time. In the 90 mg weekly group, only 17.5 percent reported that they were dissatisfied sexually compared to 25 percent in the 20 mg daily group. The remainder of the individuals in both groups reported moderate sexual satisfaction: 37.5 percent for the 90 mg weekly group and 35 percent for the 20 mg daily group.
The reaserches concludes by noting that fluoxetine is a safe treatment for PE and the side effects seem to be minimal for the dosages included in the study. The most common side effect reported for either group was nausea, followed by insomnia and headache. Both treatment groups experienced success with fluoxetine, however the “cure rate” reported with the 90 mg weekly group was higher than with the 20 mg daily group. This study demonstrates that fluoxetine taken once weekly in sufficient doses is a reliable treatment for PE.
