Anti depressant therapy and premature ejaculation

Updated Jan 7, 2008 at 1:44 EST.

Most anti depressant therapy has side effects which are detrimental to sexual function.   The only sexual disorder which can receive positive effects from anti depress ant therapy is premature ejaculation ( PE ).

Antoine Makhlouf, MD, PhD reviewed this phenomenon in the November 2007 publication of the Urologic Clinics of North America.   Most sexual disorders besides PE can be linked to intake of anti depressant medications.   SSRIs (selective, serotonin, reuptake, inhibitors) are used to treat depression, but also have been found to be effective in the treatment of premature ejaculation.   Some common SSRI’s which are prescribed off label to treat PE are flouxotene and Dapoxetine ( Prilogy™ ).
