In the 3rd volume of the
Journal of Sexual Medicine published in September 2006, Ridwan Shabsigh, MD discusses some of the most common barriers to diagnosing premature ejaculation ( PE ) some of these barriers are on the patient side, there are physician-based barriers as well.
One of the most common barriers is embarrassment on the part of the patient. Being reluctant to discuss premature ejaculation ( PE ) akes it difficult for the physician to determine the most accurate way to treat a male condition. Patients and physicians both may mistake rapid ejaculation for erectile dysfunction. Since there is no specific definition for the condition, nor are there medical laboratory tests to diagnose it, physicians are dependent on a thorough medical history and honest information from patients in order to arrive at the most appropriate decision. The condition is treatable, but both physicians and patients need to work together to overcome the barriers to arriving at the correct diagnosis.
