Colostomy can cause sexual dysfunction

Updated Dec 12, 2007 at 2:7 EST.

Colomostomy   is a surgical procedure where a part of the colon is connected onto the anterior abdominal wall, leaving the patient with an opening on the abdomen.   This kind of surgical treatment affects people sexually in various different ways; often times causing premature ejaculation and erectile dysfunction in men.   In the July 2007 edition of La Tunisie médicale, Mseddi M reviews a study of the sexual, behavioral changes which occur in patients after they receive a colostomy.

Out of 21 patients studied, 10 being male and 11 being female, two of the males suffered from PE while another two suffered from erectile dysfunction.   Two females also complained of lack of interest in sexual relations.   In conclusion, the males experienced more sexual dysfunction after surgery than the females.   Most of the sexual dysfunction in men was related to ejaculatory dysfunction.
