Combination Treatment Deemed Appropriate for Premature Ejaculation ( PE )

Updated Mar 14, 2007 at 23:11 EST.

In volume 6 of Current Urology Reports published in November 2006, WJ Hellstrom and JW Heintz expound on the theory that premature ejaculation ( PE ) has both underlying biological and psychological components. Management of the condition can best be facilitated through drug therapy and cognitive behavioral counseling.

New drug treatments proposed to treat premature ejaculation ( PE ) show promise for the underlying physical causes, yet there are psychological components that must be addressed as well, the authors contend. Despite the availability of treatment options, most men are either unsatisfied with the outcome of treatment or fail to seek it. Some of the treatment options mentioned by the authors include desensitizing medications, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), cognitive/behavioral therapy, and alpha blockers or phosophodiesterase type 5 inhibitors used primarily to treat erectile dysfunction. The authors hope that dapoxetine ( Priligy ™ ), a new SSRI still in the investigation stages, will assist in the biological treatment arena. There are still psychological areas that need to be addressed as well in order to assist in the management of the condition.
