In the April 2007 epublication of the Journal of Sexual Medicine, V Dhikav, et. al. discussed conditions like premature ejaculation ( PE ) that may also exist in Indian men who complain of Dhat syndrome. Dhat syndrome has been recognized as existing primarily in the Indian culture where men become obsessed with losing semen. Men may also have depressive symptoms in addition to Dhat syndrome.
Dhikav and colleagues examined 30 patients in an outpatient psychiatric facility who complained that they were losing semen during urination. Using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders ( DSM-IV ), researchers assessed men for depression and other conditions. Ten patients (33%) of the men in the study demonstrated signs of premature ejaculation ( PE ) along with Dhat syndrome. Men participating in the study seemed to respond well to treatment with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors ( SSRI ) as well as general counseling.
