Escitalopram shows significant results for the treatment of premature ejaculation

Updated Nov 12, 2007 at 1:52 EST.

The October 27, 2007 publication of the Journal of clinical psychopharmacology, Safarinejad MR , published a recent study of escitalopram.   This is an SSRI ( s elective, serotonin, reuptake, inhibitor) an anti depressant which is also considered to help treat premature ejaculation.   The study consisted of 276 married men, with an average age of 34.4 years old.   Half the men in the study were given 10 mg of escitalopram over a 12 week period, while the other half were given a placebo.   The patients IELT ( intravaginal ejaculatory latency time) and other factors were tested every two weeks during the treatment, at the end of the treatment and at 3 and 6 month follow up appointments after the treatment ended.

At the end of the 12 week period the group given escitalopram showed significant increases in their IELT scores while the placebo group did not.   At the 6 month follow up evaluation the escitalopram group also showed higher increases in their IELT.   In conclusion of this study, escitalopram has proven to be successful in treating premature ejaculation ( PE ) symptoms.   Another important significance is that the medication has proven to have lasting effects even after the patient stops taking it.  Further studies are still required though to determine a final conclusion on the effectiveness of the drug.
