In the 3rd Supplement of the Journal of Sexual Medicine published in September 2006, CF Donatucci considers both the physical and psychological reasons for premature ejaculation ( PE ). There is a strong biological component of premature ejaculation ( PE ) that responds to medications like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. These medications often have the effect of increasing intravaginal ejaculatory latency times in men who report the condition. In addition to the neurotransmitters that appear to be involved, some research indicates that hyperthyroidism could also be an underlying factor in the disorder.
In addition, Donatucci argues that a psychological component is present as well, although it is less well-defined. He argues, however, that the psychological factors are contributory to the disorder and can be eased through treating the physical causes of premature ejaculation ( PE ).
