In an April 2007 epublication of the Journal of Sexual Medicine, R Seagraves, R Balon, and A Clayton reviewed the diagnostic procedure for sexual dysfunctions, including premature ejaculation ( PE ). The purpose of the process was to examine the current diagnostic system and determine if it is able to meet the needs of individuals who may be affected by sexual dysfunctions. Researchers conducted extensive literature reviews and contacted any living member of the diagnostic review teams that developed diagnostic criteria for sexual dysfunctions.
The consensus of the literature review as well as the live interviews was that sexual medicine, specifically in women’s sexual dysfunctions and premature ejaculation ( PE ), needs updated diagnostic criteria in order to further advance research in the field. Additionally, recommendations by Seagraves, Balon, and Clayton were made for the committee to review when developing diagnostic criteria for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition ( DSM-V ). These recommendations were made keeping in mind that sexual dysfunctions are not transient and are related to relationship issues and life stress.
