In the 50th volume of
Bundesgesundheitsblatt Gesundheitsforschung Gesundheitsschutz published in January 2007 (Journal and article in German), U Hartmann and C Ruffer-Hesse discuss both the benefits and the pitfalls of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors ( SSRIs ) with respect to sexual dysfunctions. Due to the fact that SSRIs may delay ejaculation, many physicians, in the absence of specific medication for premature ejaculation ( PE ), have prescribed these medications for their patients. Other patients are reluctant to take the medications due to the unwanted sexual side effects.
Hartmann and Ruffer-Hesse advocate that sexual therapy needs to be included as a component of any type of pharmacological intervention when treating dysfunctions like premature ejaculation ( PE ). It is unknown the specific cause of premature ejaculation ( PE ), although studies have indicated both biological and psychological components. By using both pharmaceutical and sexual therapy, patients may be better able to cope with premature ejaculation ( PE ) and finding longer lasting results.
