Long-term Antidepressant Use for treating premature ejaculation ( PE )

Updated Feb 15, 2007 at 2:58 EST.

For people taking antidepressants for reasons other than clinical depression, there may be risks when taking them for extended periods of time. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors ( SSRIs ) are generally those most effective in treating premature ejaculation ( PE ). Dr. Peter Kramer, author of Listening to Prozac, is one of those who believe that long-term use of medications that alter serotonin can cause serious side effects that have yet to be studied through research.

While antidepressants that are prescribed for premature ejaculation ( PE )  are being used for a legitimate purpose, they may still affect change in the brain chemistry. Psychiatrists like Dr. Julie Holland at New York University admit that these changes are not fully understood. According to CNN, “the use of antidepressants by those who don`t need them raises, for many, not just medical concerns but ethical flags as well.” When using SSRIs for a long period of time for premature ejaculation ( PE ), patients should discuss any concerns that may arise with their physician to be sure that the benefits still outweigh the risks.
