In volume 14 of Primary Psychiatry published in 2007, Dr. Marcel Waldinger gives an explanation of new classification proposals for premature ejaculation ( PE ). Currently there are two classifications for premature ejaculation ( PE ): lifelong and acquired. The new proposal would add two additional categories: natural variable premature ejaculation and premature-like ejaculatory dysfunction.
One of the characteristics Waldinger uses in distinguishing between the types of premature ejaculation ( PE )
is intravaginal ejaculation latency time (IELT). For example, men with lifelong premature ejaculation ( PE )
tend to have extremely short IELT (1-1.5 minutes). With the new classification, men who may have IELT of 3-7 minutes (premature-like ejaculatory dysfunction), an otherwise normal range, may also fit into the continuum of the syndrome, although the cause of their condition may be more psychological rather than biological in nature. Acquired premature ejaculation ( PE )
may have a biological cause that can be pinpointed such as prostatitis or a relationship issue. Men with natural variable premature ejaculation ( PE )
may or may not experience the condition at any given time, and their conditions may most likely be caused by psychological factors.
