In the January 2007 epublication of European Urology, T. Symonds et. al. discuss the development of a new evaluation tool that can assist in diagnosing premature ejaculation ( PE ). Since premature ejaculation ( PE ) is multi-faceted, it has been a challenge to find a single questionnaire or survey that can predict who suffers with the condition. The
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (Fourth Edition, Text Revision) has the most popular definition of premature ejaculation ( PE ).
Researchers developed this questionnaire in three phases. Focus groups assisted in development of the content of the items in phase one. Phase two examined the items used in the survey with three groups of men to determine that it had psychometric validity. Finally, phase three focused on the development of a scoring system to determine those who are likely to score high and therefore warrant a possible diagnosis of premature ejaculation. The survey was developed with the intent to capture as much of the DSM-IV-TR criteria as possible. The project yielded a questionnaire that researchers felt would most likely be used in clinical trials when diagnosing premature ejaculation ( PE ).
