Off-Label Antidepressants Differ with Respect to Side Effects

Updated Feb 8, 2007 at 4:33 EST.

In the absence of specific medications to treat premature ejaculation ( PE ), physicians often resort to using various antidepressants as a pharmaceutical alternative. A study published by the Department of Health and Human Service’s Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality examined side effects of different “second generation” antidepressants. This review sheds light on the types of side effects that patients could experience while taking these medications.

Most second generation antidepressants produce side effects such as nausea, vomiting, constipation, dizziness, and difficulty sleeping. Another interesting note is that buproprion (Wellbutrin XL®) causes fewer sexual side effects, and therefore may want to avoid using it to treat premature ejaculation ( PE ) since it could be less effective. As with other conditions, open communication within the doctor/patient relationship will help decide the best course of action when using medications to treat premature ejaculation ( PE ).
