As with most disorders that are studied today, premature ejaculation ( PE ) has been viewed through many different lenses. One of the first lenses to emerge was linking the underlying cause to strictly psychological factors. Over the years, that viewpoint changed to incorporate some medical, behavioral learning, and finally psychopharmacological factors.
While few physicians today believe that premature ejaculation ( PE ) is strictly caused by psychological or medical factors, there remain viable options for research and treatment. Uncovering the link between the neurotransmitter serotonin has given researchers new avenues for exploration, including the development of specific selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors for treating premature ejaculation ( PE )
or rapid ejaculation. Unfortunately, this link has also brought the research back “full circle” to some concentrating strictly on biological approaches, instead of viewing the condition as one that could have both strong medical and psychological components.
