At the European Association of Urology’s 21st Annual Congress, researchers from
Italy presented the concept that premature ejaculation ( PE ) is one risk factor for illicit drug use and subsequent addiction. The study obtained detailed sexual histories from 86 former heroin addicts. The results revealed that 31.4% of men stated their desire to enhance sexual performance, specifically premature ejaculation ( PE ), as one reason why they began using heroin. Another 26.7% used other drugs as a method to find relief from sexual concerns.
While these results are controversial, it is still a field ripe for exploration in the field of sexual dysfunctions. Physicians should also take these findings into perspective when gathering clinical histories from patients reporting sexual issues.
