The American Urological Association had its annual meeting recently to discuss the current knowledge and continuing research in the field of sexual medicine.
Some of the topics covered included erectile dysfunction in relation to prostate cancer, erectile function in relation to diabetes and premature ejaculation.
Wayne J. G. Hellstrom MD covered the event in his recent article, "Sexual Dysfunction: Highlights from AUA
2007”.
The AUA acknowledged that premature ejaculation ( PE ) is the most common sexual dysfunction in men.
This recognition seemed slightly irrelevant as much more of their annual meeting was focused on erectile dysfunction issues.
Although, they did estimate that they think that between 20% and 30% of the male population suffers from PE.
They also discussed the use of off label prescribed SSRI (selective, serotonin, reuptake, inhibitors) as a common treatment option for PE.
Dapoxetine (
Prilogy™
) is an SSRI which provides delaying action from the first intake of the drug.
The panel discussed this medicine and how it was not approved by the FDA in 2005.
It is currently being tested in further studies around the globe before it will be resubmitted.
