Psychological Burden of Premature Ejaculation ( PE )

Updated Feb 22, 2007 at 9:30 EST.

In the 3rd volume of The Journal of Urology published in March 2007, DL Rowland, et al investigated the psychological effect that premature ejaculation ( PE ) had on men who reported the condition. In the study, clinicians used a community sample of men (and their sexual partners) to diagnose premature ejaculation ( PE ) using criteria from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th Edition (DSM-IV). They further limited their study group to men who had a stopwatch measured intravaginal ejaculatory latency time of ≤2 minutes.

Researchers gave men with premature ejaculation ( PE ) and men without premature ejaculation  ( PE ) a number of premature ejaculation ( PE ) surveys including the Premature Ejaculation ( PE ) Profile, Self-Esteem and Relationship Questionnaire, Golombock-Rust Inventory of Sexual Satisfaction and Medical Outcomes Study SF-36(R). Of the men who met both the DSM-IV criteria for premature ejaculation ( PE ) and the stop-watch measurement, lower levels of sexual function and satisfaction, interpersonal difficulties, and higher levels of personal stress were reported. These men also reported lower quality of life than did men without premature ejaculation ( PE ). Researchers concluded that premature ejaculation ( PE ) plays a significant role in the mental health of men who suffer from the condition.
