Given that there is both a physical and a psychological component to premature ejaculation ( PE ), some scientists speculate that certain points in the arousal process can be “reprogrammed” or modified. Other pieces of the ejaculatory response and process are not easily changed. Researchers D.L. Rowland and I.G. Motofei note that changeable components of the human response are “soft-wired” or subject to modification, while others are “hard-wired” and not so easily changed. Soft-wired components are often shaped by environment while hard-wired components could be shaped by evolution.
For example, a hard-wired response would be the basics of the ejaculatory process. A soft-wired response would be shaped by experience and open to interpretation, such as a man’s view of his previous sexual experiences and how he and his partner viewed those experiences. Men may not be able to alter the underlying physical components of ejaculation, but they could modify their perception of events and their response to the sexual experience.
