In the 60th volume of the International Journal of Clinical Practice published in June 2006, A. Riley and R.T. Segraves examines some of the treatment options facing patients with premature ejaculation ( PE ) . For those with lifelong premature ejaculation ( PE ), the recommendation for treatment is slightly different than for those with secondary premature ejaculation ( PE ). Men with secondary premature ejaculation ( PE ) have had “normal” sexual functioning at one point in time and have only recently developed difficulties. Men with lifelong premature ejaculation ( PE ) have experienced the condition since their first sexual encounter.
Riley and Segraves recommend that men with lifelong premature ejaculation ( PE ) be treated with both pharmacological interventions (usually off-label antidepressants or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) and psychological counseling. Counseling should start with behavioral interventions and focus on relationship counseling if behavioral counseling is not showing progress.
