Topical Treatment Alone Sufficient for Premature Ejaculation

Updated Feb 1, 2007 at 3:21 EST.

A study released in February 2006 seems to indicate that topical ointments can be used alone when treating premature ejaculation. The study examined the effectiveness of using the oral medication sildenafil, the medication plus the topical anesthetic, the anesthetic alone or a placebo. Researchers noted that the ointment used alone was just as effective as taking sildenafil 45 minutes before using the cream. The ointment used was EMLA cream, composed of 2.5% lidocaine and 2.5% prilocaine. Using the sildenafil alone was effective only 55% of the time, while the cream by itself produced a 77.3% response rate.

When examining the results, researchers concluded that using the EMLA alone seemed, “a reasonable, inexpensive and effective treatment modality for premature ejaculation treatment.”
