In the 18th volume of the
International Journal of Impotence Research published in March 2006, M Arafa and R Shamoul discussed the possibility of using sertraline HCL to treat men with premature ejaculation ( PE ). Sertraline HCL is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor ( SSRI ) . The study measured premature ejaculation ( PE ) using the Arabic Index of Premature Ejaculation ( AIPE ) and controlled by placebo during the trial. There were 147 men with premature ejaculation ( PE ) who participated in the study.
Both group I and group II in the study received both the the placebo and sertraline HCL during the four week study. Eighty-one percent (81%) of men in the study reported an increase in their score on the AIPE after taking sertraline HCL. In addition, at the end of the study, men who submitted to a follow-up (100 of the original 147 subjects), 66% of them relapsed after stopping sertraline. The side effects did not cause any noticeable discomfort and researchers concluded that sertraline HCL could be beneficial in the treatment of premature ejaculation ( PE ).
