There is not one agreed upon definition of premature ejaculation in the United States.
This is one of the reasons it is so hard to diagnose in patients.
Stanley E. Althof, PhD reviews current definitions of the disorder in his recent article in the November 2007 edition of the Urologic Clinics of North America.
The Diagnostic and Statistic Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision defines it as this, “Persistent or recurrent ejaculation with minimal sexual stimulation before, on, or shortly after penetration and before the person wishes it. The condition must also cause marked distress or interpersonal difficulty and cannot be attributable exclusively to the direct effects of a substance.”
Patients and doctors need to keep in mind that this is only one of many definitions and each specific case of premature ejaculation need to be evaluated on an individual basis.
