The problems physicians face when treating PE

Updated Dec 23, 2007 at 3:47 EST.

Even though premature ejaculation ( PE ) is one of the most common sexual male disorders, it provides many difficulties to health professionals who are trying to treat these symptoms in their patients. Gurkan L wrote an interesting article recently on premature ejaculation in the Jan 2008 publication of the Asian Journal of Andrology.   The article was published by the Section of Andrology, Department of Urology at Tulane University Health Sciences.

Gurkan points out the fact that there is no universally excepted definition of the disease and there are no medications available which have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration.   At the moment American Physicians are prescribing off-label medications such as SSRI medications.   These are selective, serotonin, reuptake, inhibitors which are often prescribed to treat depression;  but they have also shown efficacy in clinical trials to treat PE.   Doctors are also treating patients with behavioral therapies and topical on demand treatments such as ss cream.
