The risks involved with SSRI medications for the treatment of premature ejaculation

Updated Dec 26, 2007 at 6:5 EST.

When selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors ( SSRI`s   ) were first given to psychiatric patients, no one would have guessed they were going to have such an impact on the field of premature ejaculation.   In the November 2007 publication of, The Urologic clinics of North America, Marcel D. Waldinger, MD writes about the impact, and the medical risks regarding intake of these revolutionary drugs.

One of the risks of taking selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors on the long term is the risk of weight gain and associated with it could be the occurrence of a risk of acquiring diabetes mellitus type II.   Another thing patients need to keep in mind when using the drugs to treat their premature ejaculation, is that it can be dangerous to discontinue the use of SSRI`s abruptly.   In this instance SSRI discontinuation syndrome can occur.   The signs and symptoms of the syndrome are nausea, vertigo, tremors, and a shock like sensation which happens when the head is turned too fast.
