The Journal of Sexual medicine published a very interesting article in its October 2007 edition about the patterns of practice American Urologists follow when treating premature ejaculation ( PE ) in their patients.
The article written by Shindel A reviews a nation wide survey that was sent to 1,009 practicing urologists through a randomly generated mailing list.
The results of the survey are quite interesting.
73% of the urologists saw less than one PE patient per week.
Doctors were questioned about which treatment option they choose to prescribe first to their PE patients.
26% of doctors prescribed on demand treatment using SSRI (selective, serotonin, reuptake, inhibitors).
That was the most common choice.
22% of the doctors who completed the survey chose daily dosage therapy with SSRI drugs as their first option of treatment.
11% of doctors prescribed a combination of SSRI drugs, topical treatments, the squeeze technique, and the stop start technique.
90% of the doctor`s surveyed answered that they would treat erectile dysfunction ( ED ) first in their patients who suffer from both PE and ED.
